3 Beginner-Friendly Watercolor Autumnal Illustrations: Pumpkin, Witch Hat, & Abstract Leaf

Today we will be learning 3 super easy watercolor illustrations that are perfect for Autumn! All of these illustrations are only 3-4 steps each, making it perfect for anyone who may be new to watercolor!

Supplies Needed:

  • Glass of water to rinse your brushes
  • Watercolor paint brush
  • Good quality watercolor paint (I am using Emily Grace Palettes handmade paint)
  • Watercolor paper (I am using cold-pressed watercolor paper)

For more information about a detailed supplies list, check out this blog post! It is dedicated to all things watercolor supplies that I use and love! Now, let’s get right to the tutorials!

Tutorial #1: Making a Watercolor Witch Hat in 3 Steps!

For this tutorial, I am only using two colors: a deep lilac and a black. Feel free to use whatever colors you prefer, just make sure that you have one lighter color and one darker color.

Step 1: Take your lighter color and paint a little cone.

Step 2: While the paint is still wet, take that lighter color again to add a skinny oval to the base of the cone. Wait for the paint to fully dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Add a band around the cone using the darker color.

Tutorial #2: A 4 Step Abstract Watercolor Leaf

For this illustration, I am using three autumnal colors: orange; a very deep, warm yellow; and a burnt umber.

Step 1: Outline a squiggly leaf shape with your orange paint.

Step 2: While the paint is still wet, fill in the shape.

Step 3: When the paint is fully dry from the previous steps, sweep the burnt umber color down the leaf’s center to create a stem.

Step 4: Once the stem has dried, use the warm, dark yellow on the tips of the leaf to create a color gradient.

Tutorial #3: A 4 Step Simple Watercolor Pumpkin

For this tutorial, I am using the exact same color palette as the leaf!

Step 1: Start with an oval using the orange paint.

Step2: Use the orange paint to add a rounded half circle to each side of the first oval from step 1.

Step 3: Once the orange paint from steps 1 & 2 are fully dry, add a stem using the burnt umber.

Step 4: Using the dark yellow color, add drops of color on the oval and half circles from steps 1 & 2 to create a highlight on the pumpkin and a slight color gradient.

I hope you loved these simple illustrations! I will be back with more tutorials soon! Be sure to subscribe to my newsletter to be the first to know when I post new tutorials, supplies, lists, and more!
